Understand How Fog Computing Impacts IT

We are living through constant innovations. Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and high-speed wireless networks have brought changes beyond what we could imagine. As a result, we increasingly use devices for business decisions, supported by data analysis.

With the growing use of the cloud, demand is going beyond its capacity, demanding an improved approach. In this context, Fog Computing emerges — a decentralized computing infrastructure in which data, computing, storage, and applications are distributed in the most logical and efficient place between the data source and the cloud.

Differences between Fog Computing and Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing

Traditional Cloud Computing uses centralized and shared data storage. It typically does not influence distance, network complexity, or compliance, which can create challenges with latency, bandwidth, security, and reliable accessibility.

In the context of digital transformation, the immense amount of peripheral data generated by IoT sensors makes it inefficient to transmit these large data packets back to the cloud. For example: on a production line, any delay in transmitting data from IoT sensors can be extremely harmful.

Fog Computing

The concept being explored with Fog Computing is that the network is more decentralized than in the traditional cloud architecture.

In this model, applications run in an intermediate layer between the cloud and the hardware. While the cloud is about centralization, Fog Computing is about decentralization.

Ultimately, its goal is to improve efficiency, potentially working to reduce the amount of data being transmitted back to the cloud and including only what is specific and necessary.

Impacts of Fog Computing on IT

In a Fog Computing environment, processing occurs at the data hub on a smart device, or on a router or gateway. Thus, it reduces the amount of data sent to the cloud.

Better data transmission

In Fog Computing, intelligence is on the local network.

Data is transmitted from endpoints to a gateway where it is then sent to processing and return communication sources. The intelligence and power of the gateway or edge device reside in programmable automation controllers.

Reduction of failures

Fog Computing is more scalable and offers a better picture of the network, as data from multiple points provides elements of it.

One of the main benefits of Fog Computing is the reduction of points of failure. This occurs because each piece of information on the network is treated independently, determining which data should be stored locally and which should be sent to the cloud for further analysis.

Optimization for IoT

Since cloud computing is not as viable for many Internet of Things applications, Fog Computing is often used. Although cloud computing is still relevant when it comes to IoT applications, its effectiveness can become obsolete.

We see, therefore, that Fog Computing takes on critical work. The way IoT is growing demands a secure infrastructure foundation that can handle all its requirements. At the present moment, Fog Computing presents itself as the most viable option available.
