The benefits of Machine Learning in industry

Technological advances have radically transformed the way industries operate, opening up a range of possibilities and optimizing production processes. A striking example of this transformation is Machine Learning, an emerging technology that is revolutionizing the industrial sector.

Although it may seem like a recent concept, the fundamental ideas of Machine Learning began to develop in the 1960s. With the popularization of the internet and the rise of smart technologies, Machine Learning began to play a central role in industrial automation and data analysis.

In this article, we will explore the basic concepts of Machine Learning and discuss how this technology can be applied to improve industrial processes. Our goal is to provide a clear and didactic introduction so you can understand and begin applying these concepts in your organization.

What is Machine Learning and how does it work?

Machine Learning is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that allows machines to analyze data and learn from it, without the need for explicit programming for each task. Primarily, Machine Learning is a set of algorithms that improve as they process large volumes of data, aiming to solve specific problems and improve the accuracy of analytical models over time.

It is capable of operating through algorithms that adjust based on the analyzed data, becoming more effective over time. These algorithms are capable of:

  • Developing analytical models quickly;
  • Learning from data;
  • Implementing continuous improvements;
  • Creating new models based on discovered patterns.

In industry, Machine Learning can increase productivity, identify bottlenecks and failures, and uncover new business opportunities through predictive analysis.

Types of Machine Learning

There are several types of Machine Learning, each with its own characteristics and applications. Learn more about each of them below:

1. Supervised learning

In supervised learning, algorithms are trained with a labeled dataset, meaning that each example in the dataset is annotated with the correct answer. The system learns to map inputs to outputs, making it easier to identify patterns and predict future results based on historical data. For example: classifying emails as spam or non-spam.

2. Unsupervised learning

Here, algorithms are fed unlabeled data and tasked with finding hidden structures or patterns within that data. This type of learning is useful for identifying groupings and associations in large volumes of data. For example, grouping customers based on their purchasing behavior.

3. Semi-supervised learning

In this case, the process combines a small amount of labeled data with a large amount of unlabeled data. This can improve model training efficiency, especially when data labeling is expensive or time-consuming. We can cite sentiment analysis on social media as an example, where not all posts are pre-classified.

4. Reinforcement learning

In this type of learning, algorithms learn through interaction with an environment, receiving rewards or penalties based on the actions taken. It is widely used in systems that require continuous decision-making and optimization. It is used, for example, in robot control and game optimization.

5. Deep learning

Deep Learning is a subcategory of Machine Learning that uses artificial neural networks to process large volumes of data and recognize complex patterns. It is particularly effective for tasks such as image recognition and natural language processing. Widely used for facial recognition in security systems.

Difference between Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Although often used interchangeably, it is important to point out that Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are not the same thing. Artificial Intelligence is a much broader field that aims to create systems capable of simulating human intelligence; on the other hand, Machine Learning is a specific technique used to develop that intelligence through learning from data.

In this sense, AIs seek to solve complex problems, while Machine Learning focuses on identifying patterns and learning from data. Both concepts are interconnected, but operate at different levels of complexity and application.

Applications of Machine Learning in Industry

Machine Learning offers several advantages for the industrial sector, including:

  • Task automation: Reduces the need for manual intervention, increasing operational efficiency.
  • Real-time monitoring: Continuously analyzes data, allowing problems to be identified and immediate solutions implemented.
  • Production customization: Adjusts manufacturing processes based on specific data, better meeting market demands.
  • Bottleneck identification: Detects and corrects flaws that impact efficiency and final product quality.
  • Predictive analysis: Uses predictive models to anticipate failures and optimize preventive maintenance.

These applications help improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase the profitability of industrial operations.

The future with Machine Learning

In a competitive scenario, investing in technologies like Machine Learning is essential for industries that want to innovate and thrive. This technology not only optimizes processes, but also offers new opportunities for data analysis and strategic decision-making.

Released in January 2024, new research from Accenture concluded that the world is in the middle of a massive technological shift as AI and other disruptive technologies become “Human by Design”—more human and intuitive for people to use.

The research further suggests that as human-centric technologies wield even greater capabilities, they become easier to interact with and become even more integrated into every aspect of our lives; in other words, we are moving toward a world where technology will become more ubiquitous while also becoming more invisible.

Accenture’s Technology Vision 2024: “Human by Design: How AI Unleashes the Next Level of Human Potential” explores how, after years of exponential innovation, technology—especially generative AI—is becoming more human in nature. Therefore, as technology evolves to be more human-centric, it is able to generate substantially greater capabilities for people to expand their potential and reinvent business as we know it.

According to Accenture research, generative AI has the potential to impact 44% of all working hours across industries in the US, enable productivity improvements across 900 different types of jobs, and create at least $8 trillion in global economic value. All this data reflects a very positive outlook, especially for those who have started looking to the future with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
