IT Risk Management: 3 Steps to Maintain Corporate Governance

We know that in recent years, the part of corporate digital governance routines that has been gaining a more prominent role is IT risk management.

After all, having a proactive management policy that quickly eliminates problems helps the business reduce the impact that failures cause in corporate processes — and, consequently, improves the performance of systems and computer equipment.

But for this strategy to be effective, the company needs to adopt efficient planning, based on three major steps. Want to know what they are? Then keep reading this post and learn what needs to be done to have effective IT risk management!

1. Risk Mapping and Identification

The first step to optimize IT infrastructure is to identify the company’s vulnerabilities. Thus, the IT manager must map security flaws, evaluate the state of equipment, and define the biggest problems of the systems and equipment used in the main business routines.

This routine can be done through various activities, which go beyond IT monitoring. One of them is conducting interviews with managers and professionals from various sectors.

Basically, this strategy helps the IT manager identify the needs and main problems faced daily by internal teams. In addition, evaluating how work is executed in each sector makes the search for problems more precise.

Operational data and existing indicators can also be evaluated. They will provide a technical view of how each system works — which software is overloaded and the times when internal infrastructure is most in demand.

Thus, during risk treatment, the IT manager will be able to take measures with a greater impact on system performance. And for mapping to be effective, it is essential that the IT manager is able to track problems according to the business profile and its traditional activities.

In this sense, a company that works with banking transactions, for example, faces a different set of threats than software development companies deal with.

Furthermore, the size of the enterprise and its internal infrastructure are also factors that influence the main problems a company may face.

Therefore, by defining critical processes, evaluating the business profile and its main processes, risk mapping will be consistent with the reality of the enterprise.

Potential risks — such as data loss and sudden drops in network infrastructure performance, for example — will be identified more quickly. In addition, the impacts caused by this problem will be potentially smaller.

2. Risk Assessment and Treatment

We know that just identifying risks is not enough to ensure the company can mitigate problems with agility in the medium and long term.

Indeed, faced with a scenario where the company deals with multiple threats, managers must work together to prioritize the risks that have the greatest impact on business revenue.

Thus, the measures taken will be based on a more effective and economical allocation of resources. And one of the factors to be considered is the probability of a problem occurring.

In this sense, each identified risk must be evaluated according to the type of activity linked to it, as well as the chances of the vulnerability being exploited or triggered due to operational errors or ineffective management policies.

So, keep in mind that any event that causes a negative impact on internal processes is a risk that becomes a reality. Along with analyzing the probability of a risk becoming an event, the IT manager must keep in mind the impact each problem causes on the business operational chain.

And this analysis must take into account which sectors will be impacted by the exploitation of a vulnerability, and how this factor will influence business revenues.

Thus, impact analysis can identify all factors influenced by external problems, such as financial losses, loss of market leadership, and a decrease in market share.

Thus, evaluating the probability of a problem occurring and the impact it can cause on the day-to-day business (and its revenues) makes IT risk management more effective.

And the measures taken to improve internal infrastructure will have a more precise priority distribution, making processes continually more reliable and secure.

3. Monitoring and Implementation of Improvements for Future Problem Prevention

Once risks have been identified and classified according to the impact they can cause on the business operational chain, the IT sector must define and implement a set of measures that reduce the risks of the company facing medium and long-term problems.

In other words, the IT manager must plan processes that reduce IT infrastructure exposure and create a high-performance and secure work environment.

And all adopted measures must take into account the data gathered in previous stages. Thus, planning will consider the routine of each sector and how the company handles its customers’ requests.

In addition, internal processes also need to be considered, since the adopted measures must improve their execution without considerably decreasing internal productivity levels.

In this scenario, adopted measures may include process restructuring, implementation of security systems, new indicators, and control policies. Furthermore, new routines can be planned, including the creation of regular operational reports and the planning of more robust management policies.

The IT risk management policy must also consider the need to continuously monitor IT infrastructure. After all, evaluating the state of software and network devices is crucial for indicators and other metrics to accurately represent the real situation of the business.

Furthermore, such solutions give the IT manager the ability to identify new problems more quickly, reducing operational costs of sector policies.

Long-term, the risk management policy will be responsible for creating a flow of improvements in IT management routines. Then, area professionals will be able to identify, diagnose, and prioritize all business security flaws.

Ultimately, the chances of a vulnerability causing a major impact on internal processes will be reduced — and easily.
