Generation Y Professionals
Generation Y professionals grew up together with the development of modernity; consequently, they are impatient individuals who yearn for rapid career growth, bold, unpretentious, questioning people who have changed the working style of today’s world. Because they are impatient, Generation Y professionals know they need to be prepared for opportunities, which is why they value education and formal careers, dedicating themselves strongly to this.
To deal with this generation, the market needed to make working hours more flexible and adapt people management by including more feedback, democratizing decisions, and above all, leaving behind the formalities that existed between hierarchies.
Professionals of this generation speak eye-to-eye with their managers, setting aside any formality, but they only accept as leaders people whom they admire for their knowledge and skills in their field of expertise.
Despite all the changes that have already occurred, the market will need to be prepared to welcome the newest group of professionals belonging to Generation Z.
Characteristics of Generation Z
Born in the mid-1990s, Generation Z gets its name from the term “channel surfing” (the act of constantly switching TV channels using the remote control), meaning that this generation was born and raised completely surrounded by technologies, receiving thousands of pieces of information at all times.
These young people have a natural familiarity with electronic devices and technological innovations, but at the same time, they tend to be distracted and withdrawn. They are very individualistic, preferring to work alone with their electronics without depending on another person, which is why they will need to learn how to work in a team.
Because they receive a lot of new information, they manage to execute multiple tasks at the same time, but their concentration span is shorter than that of previous generations; they tend to be dispersed professionals and will need to develop this aspect to be able to execute activities that require greater concentration.
Due to the rapid technological advancement currently presented, these young people quickly stop valuing things and always need to be involved with innovations. They need challenging and innovative activities that always interact with new technologies; only in this way will they be retained in their positions.
Generation Z Talents
Retaining these talents will not be an easy task for management; just like the adaptations currently taking place, new ways of motivation must be found that align with the new personality of this generation. Managers will need to extract the best from these professionals while they can, as they tend to change organizations more frequently compared to other generations.
Corporate tomorrow will depend on leaders adapting and training themselves to successfully harness the best that these young people have to offer.
