Souza Cruz finalized in November 2011 what it considers to be one of its most important IT projects. The company updated its databases to Oracle 11g, Oracle WebLogic application server, and hardware, a structure that serves three business areas of the company: TM&D, Tobacco, and Industrial Departments.
The project, named Data Center Refresh, required an investment of around 8.3 million reais and has already registered savings of 1.7 million reais in hardware, which, according to the company, equals about 21% of the project’s contribution. Server scalability and load balancing optimization helped reduce investment in hardware acquisition, notes Claudio Poscidonio, project manager at Souza Cruz.
According to Poscidonio, the company achieved other benefits with the technological modernization.
“Performance gains, stability, and predictability were the first results noticed by the users. Processes that were previously impossible to execute now work according to business needs,” he summarizes.
The executive also mentions that the company was able to standardize the operating system of the servers in the data center located on the company’s premises and separate the system, database, and processing layers. Previously, the organization had various operating systems and now uses Linux on all servers.
In the opinion of Clovis Vasselai, CEO of Teclógica (the integrator that assisted Souza Cruz in planning and migration), the update generated several opportunities for the organization, and the new structure is expected to be replicated across the entire group of which Souza Cruz is a part.
