5 major challenges in proactive IT management and how to overcome them

The creation of proactive IT management is pointed out by many experts as a way to make the corporate environment more effective and with a smaller number of problems. In companies where this occurs, the impact caused by server interruptions, system crashes, or security flaws tends to be smaller, since technicians will be able to track points that need attention with greater agility and, thus, apply corrections quickly.

Proactive IT management goes against a software maintenance routine in which problems are solved only after they occur. It seeks to identify problems quickly, in such a way that their impact on service execution is as small as possible.

However, its adoption can bring several challenges to the company. Want to know the main ones? Then, follow our article!

1. Integration between support and monitoring teams

The integration between professionals is one of the keys to creating a work environment with high collaboration and efficiency. In this sense, managers must work so that all professionals act together in the search for solutions and constant exchange of information relevant to the sector’s service. This includes, in particular, user support and infrastructure monitoring teams.

The teams responsible for resource monitoring activities are fundamental to the proactivity of IT management. In this scenario, whenever failures are identified, professionals working in support must be informed. Thus, if any user is affected, the person responsible for handling the ticket will be able to provide more precise feedback.

At times when services are interrupted for equipment replacement or implementation of improvements, professionals responsible for handling tickets must also be notified. This way, they will be able to issue communications and plan actions to help other employees deal with possible tool unavailabilities.

It is also worth noting that those responsible for support must always alert monitoring technicians to any problems faced by users. Thus, they will apply corrections more easily, in addition to having a broader view of how IT services operate.

2. Implementation of monitoring solutions in proactive IT management

The implementation of tools that allow monitoring the IT infrastructure is a fundamental step for any company seeking proactive IT management. For this to happen efficiently, extensive planning must be carried out, so that technicians can quickly adapt to the new software. Thus, they can be used to the maximum, with a low number of errors and problems caused by a lack of training or knowledge of the solution used.

The implementation of monitoring solutions can be done in various areas. Network equipment can be monitored for early identification of failures or performance problems. On the other hand, continuous monitoring of corporate systems allows the rapid identification of availability issues, which reduces the time required to restore services.

3. Adoption of data analysis tools

Data analysis must be done continuously by companies that intend to create a continuous improvement flow for their management routines. Logs created by monitoring tools can be processed so that IT managers can identify patterns, operational bottlenecks, and vulnerabilities that may impact the work of sector professionals. Once problems have been identified, measures must be adopted to solve existing flaws.

Data analysis routines can also serve for the company to evaluate the impact of changes made. This will be done by identifying productivity gains, reduction of the error rate, and expansion of the availability degree of corporate tools. Thus, the company will be able to evaluate the success of its strategies and how they were able to improve the corporate environment.

4. Professional training and feedback delivery

Training IT professionals must be done regularly. Whenever new solutions, operational routines, or management methods are adopted, the manager must make sure that all new information is aligned among the team. In this sense, training is a simple strategy to make the implementation of new practices more effective.

By carving out a few working hours regularly, the IT manager can provide feedback, tips on new tools, and help resolve questions. Training can be done with all professionals or individually. In all cases, it is important to ensure that everyone has absorbed as much knowledge as possible, leveling up the quality of everyone’s activities.

5. Balance between reactivity and proactivity

The balance between reactivity and proactivity is one of the biggest challenges IT managers face. Good IT management will primarily add value to business activities. Therefore, a balance must be maintained between the different management routines, in such a way that all activities are maintained with high quality and in a continuous optimization process.

Highly reactive IT management will have greater difficulty solving problems and will likely have a long response time to simple requests. Thus, an environment is created where incidents are managed with a major impact on business operations. Consequently, the number of errors in troubleshooting processes tends to be higher.

On the other hand, excessive focus on proactivity can significantly increase the enterprise’s workload, creating difficulty in task distribution and routine improvement. Small and large incidents start to be handled with the same degree of priority, and, as a result, the sector’s burden becomes excessive.

Given this, IT managers must seek a balance between proactive and reactive processes. The entire sector must work supported by solid documentation, high-capacity tools, and good integration. This way, it will be possible to correctly define the priority for each ticket and determine which systems need continuous monitoring.

In the long run, good IT management will align its objectives with business strategies, helping professionals innovate more and create high-value services. Thus, the company will remain competitive and capable of generating a continuous revenue flow.
