How will customized production change the course of industry?

You have probably opted to buy an exclusive product. A piece of clothing or an item for your home, with unique characteristics, according to your personal taste. This is what defines customized production.

And more than a business model, customization is also a trend that is set to strengthen the concept of Industry 4.0 and promises to be increasingly present in the routine of companies. To learn more, keep reading.

Research points out the directions of the industry

To understand the impact of customized production on industry, just look at what market research shows. One such study was conducted by Dassault Systèmes, a global benchmark in Industry 4.0 solutions and Teclógica’s partner in Latin America. The data, which is the result of a global study with young people from France, China, and the United States, showed that:

  • 83% of consumers want products to adapt to their needs;
  • Fast delivery is essential and only 21% of respondents are willing to wait more than four days to receive an order;
  • The cost of customization is not a problem, as consumers said they are willing to pay up to 25% more for a product that matches their preferences;
  • For the industry, customization goes beyond personalized products. 50% of consumers understand personalization as the option of differentiated services before the purchase. This includes services and products based on personal data recorded in previous purchases, supported by technology.
  • Data security is a concern for 96% of consumers, who only agree to share information if it is in exchange for customization.

In light of this study, it is evident that the industry’s need for adaptation is urgent. It is necessary to bet on technologies for the optimization of resources and structure, and to deliver what the consumer wants. Mass customization is the ideal concept when we talk about product personalization.

Within this concept, production customization occurs not only with speed, but with attractive costs for the industry and the market. It is about integrating technologies, data, and automation into the production process to guarantee the possibility of developing customized items with investments similar to mass production.

This new wave of innovation, in which the use and processing of consumer data, with due security, results in customized and efficient production, is already called the Fifth Industrial Revolutionl.

The 5th industrial revolution is here, but it is still difficult to predict the full innovation potential in this new scenario; however, it is evident that the use of technologies for efficient delivery will be the path to follow.

Customized production in the post-crisis era

Given the current global industry situation, countries around the globe are seeking a solution to minimize the impacts caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many sectors are already organizing for economic recovery, with the expectation that the post-crisis period will bring a series of business opportunities.

By overcoming the barriers of this health and consequently economic crisis, the expectation is that a new wave of mass consumption will spread across the globe. In this scenario, industries aligned with technological innovation, ready to deliver products that match consumer preferences with agility, quality, and efficiency, will come out ahead.

Thus, the optimization of resources and solutions involving the collection and processing of data throughout the production line, mobility, and the use of IoT, artificial intelligence, and fast programming will take center stage. In this scenario, customized production will make industry much more aligned with reality and the market, delivering products to consumers that adhere to the new reality.

For industry, technology will be crucial to integrate a new consumption model without jeopardizing business sustainability. The efficient use of resources and production scheduling to make the best use of structure will be a competitive differentiator.

Solutions for industry

An example of technology applied to industry is shop floor management. In this process, solutions such as Delmia Apriso, developed by Dassault Systèmes and marketed by Teclógica, are a standout resource. With this system, there is end-to-end management of the production process: the structure is aligned for greater productivity and efficiency, and the data collected throughout the process helps in the continuous improvement of production and intelligent resource management.

Another solution aligned with mass customization is Delmia Ortems, which performs a year’s worth of production planning in just 30 minutes. With it, planning takes all production data into account, making management more efficient and ensuring rapid, assertive adjustments for efficient delivery to the final consumer.

In other words: from the moment the industry pays attention to consumer trends – such as customization – production, as shown in the research above, can be much more competitive. And technology, aligned with data collection, analysis, and transformation, will be the only way to strengthen business while ensuring information security and privacy.
